People power in St Heliers

This morning’s  Herald reports that “Residents rally to save art deco houses”. Apparently 250 folk in St Heliers attended a public meeting to protest the demolition of three art deco houses that were built in Turua St in the mid 1930s. However, the developers have the legal right to proceed, so it looks as if the protest will be in vain.

Councillor Brewer was in attendance and had this to say:

“The new council has got to do better if it wants Auckland to retain 100 distinct villages. We’ve got to start treating locals and heritage advocates with more respect. The fact that this meeting attracted so much interest shows that a lot of people have had enough.”

This, along with the Dominion Road fiasco, makes it clear that local communities need to be given a much greater say, much earlier in the planning process.
